This isn’t a post debating the merits of the idea to ban the sale of sugary drinks beyond a certain size, but rather a challenge to the language being used to talk about it. The debate has sparked a momentary surge in the common use of the phrase “nanny state” and variations on the term/notion….
exactly. if anything it’s men that place the most restrictions on what we do with our health and bodies. this kind of language was also used with Hilary Clinton when she ran for president. “Oh I don’t want her to nag me and tell me what to do like she’s my mom. she’s bitchy, her voice is grating, etc.” This same kind of rhetoric is used again and again. It makes it harder for women to be taken seriously. This also shows again the general societal attitude of disrespect towards emotional labor. So much wrong with this.
